Rome is incomparable, and part of its allure may lie in its history, which has witnessed periods of great splendour followed by others of sad decadence.
Rome, however, has always begun anew, hence its nickname, “The Eternal City”.
History and legend proceed side by side, entwined. Through the course of the centuries the city has acquired a unique appearance, which makes it possible for the visitor to stroll through twenty-five centuries of history, architecture and art.
Rome is a city rich in monuments, artistic places and other places of beauty.
Most of these are lcoated in the historical centre:
St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums, the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Catacombs and numerous museums.
The centre ville is dominated by the traditional "Seven hills of Rome":
the Capitoline, Palatine, Viminal, Quirinal, Esquiline, Caelian, and Aventine hills are traversed by the river Tiber, which flows south through Rome, with the city centre located where the midstream Tiber Island facilitates a crossing. Central Rome is surrounded by some large green areas and opulent ancient villas, which are the remains of the crown villas which once encircled the papal city.
Today, Rome is modern and cosmopolitan, the third most visited tourist destination in the EU, and guarantees to provide a unique experience whether you are visiting for the first time or are returning to discover more.
